Just off the coast lies the unspoiled island of Vilm, which, with its ancient beech forests, is one of the region's most special natural treasures. Also particularly worth seeing are St. James’s Cathedral and the Haken Terrace, which offers a beautiful view of the Oder River and the harbor. Wide boulevards, spacious squares, and numerous green spaces characterize the cityscape and invite visitors to take leisurely strolls.
Schwedt is located directly on the Oder River and right on the German-Polish border, surrounded by the unique river landscape of the Lower Oder Valley National Park. Vast floodplains, waterways, and wet meadows make Germany’s only floodplain national park a special natural experience and a habitat for numerous rare animal and plant species. In the town, the Uckermärkische Bühnen theater, the Protestant St. Catherine’s Church, and the European Huguenot Park are well worth a visit. The former Schlossfreiheit still serves as a reminder of the history of the former Schwedt Castle. The combination of culture, local history, and the impressive Oder landscape gives Schwedt its special charm.
Surrounded by the lush forests and waterways of the Barnim region, Eberswalde lies on the Finow Canal, one of Germany’s oldest artificial waterways still navigable by boat. The city’s long industrial history remains closely tied to the canal to this day and can be explored through its historic locks and former factory sites. Among the most famous sights are the imposing St. Mary Magdalene Church and the Finow Canal with its towpaths, which invite visitors to take walks along the water. Another popular destination is the Eberswalde Zoological Garden, which is idyllically situated in the middle of a wooded area.
Just outside Berlin lies Oranienburg, a historic town on the Havel River best known for its magnificent Baroque palace. Oranienburg Palace is one of Brandenburg’s most prominent Baroque structures and serves as a reminder of the town’s close ties to the Prussian royal family. The sprawling palace grounds, with their beautiful gardens, are perfect for a leisurely stroll. In addition, numerous waterways, green spaces, and the historic downtown shape the cityscape, making Oranienburg a diverse destination just outside the capital.
Tegel, located in the north of the German capital, is a green and water-rich district of Berlin offering numerous opportunities for varied adventures. The Greenwich Promenade along Lake Tegel, with its expansive lakeside paths and beautiful views, invites visitors to take a leisurely stroll. Not far from there is the magnificent Tegel Palace, once the residence of the von Humboldt family, as well as “Dicke Marie,” considered Berlin’s oldest tree. The historic village church of Alt-Tegel and the lively pedestrian zone around Gorkistraße are also worth a visit.
